In the last decades our energy system has changed significantly; it moved from a system with central power generation to a system where power generation is de-centralized. Everywhere we find photovoltaic cells or wind turbines, we know that inverters are applied and energy is injected into the system. But also the loads have changed; from linear loads like incandescent lamps and electric motors to non-linear loads. Think of energy saving lighting, e-car charging stations and server supplies….

With the increase of complexity of the entire energy system, from power generation to consumption, we see a change in the nature of problems and an increase of them; both in occurrence and complexity.

These problems have a negative impact on the production costs of a facility; they cause energy waste, shorten the lifetime of assets, interfere with production continuity and sometimes they overload existing infrastructure so an expensive extension is required. In short, it is worth to solve these problems.

An important step in the problem-solving process is taking measurements and identify problems from the results so the appropriate countermeasures can be taken. With theory, hands-on exercises and case study analysis, the participant will learn about the symptom’s of most current problems and how to measure, recognize and estimate the impact of them.

Safety (IEC61010-1), measuring current with clamps, connecting voltage probes,….
Nominal Voltage/current, Power (KW, KVA, KVAR), (non-)linear loads

Practice & workshop

Setting up a Power Quality measurement; Instrument settings (e.g. ratio, limits, network, phasor) Instrument features (e.g. Scope function, calibration, Instrument Class,…)
Measurement Hands-on and Interpreting the results according to regulation EN-50160 (incl. limits); Dips, Swells, Flicker, Harmonics, Unbalance, Interruptions and Transients.
