Snell Infrared for Mechanical Inspections - Online
5748 5748
Become successful in performing mechanical inspections by transitioning from the visual world into the thermal/infrared world.
Learn a little history then delve into infrared equipment to understand the basics of how infrared equipment works. There are different kinds of infrared imagers and it is critical to understanding how to properly use them. You will be able to download one of our QuickStarts for your particular camera. We then explain the qualities of what a good IR image looks like and concentrate on the theory of heat energy, temperature and how infrared radiation behaves. Using our “kitchen physics” approach here are several hands-on simulations and exercises built into the training. While owning an infrared camera is not necessarily required to participate, those who wish to complete the class in its entirety should have access to one.
Next, we discuss safety and cover the basic safe practices when conducting a mechanical infrared survey. We examine basic mechanical fundamentals you need to help you do effective surveys as well as the typical failure modes you will encounter during your mechanical inspections. We examine the issues to be considered when conducting an inspection, as well as some important threshold temperatures. See the actual mechanical equipment you can survey with IR, and how to properly inspect the equipment. We discuss how to approach setting up inspection routes and the data to save, depending upon the various inspection methodologies. Lastly, we talk about analyzing images and writing reports. Finishing this course prepares students to start successfully applying infrared technology to inspect mechanical systems for a wide range of deficiencies.
Topics covered include:
- Introductions
- Think Thermally®
- Safety Issues
- Mechanical Fundamentals
- Important Threshold Temperatures
- Mechanical Applications
- Motors, Bearings, Couplings
- Belt Drives

- Tanks and Silos
- Methodologies
- Analysis, Prioritization & Reporting
There are several hands-on simulations and exercises built into the training. While owning an infrared camera is not necessarily required to participate, those who wish to complete the class in its entirety should have access to one. Finishing this course prepares students to start successfully applying infrared technology to to inspect a wide range of electrical systems—from high voltage all the way into low voltage—in commercial, industrial and utility settings.

Curriculum & Instructors
Our curriculum is designed and overseen by ASNT Level 3 NDT and PdM Certificate Holders. All instructors have years of field experience as well as instructional backgrounds and have been certified in the Snell Methodology of Instruction. This assures the viewer the highest quality instruction and educational content.
Delivery Format
The video-based course is divided up into sections including lectures, hands-on infrared demonstrations and experiments, and field assignments. Each module is a building block that allows the viewer to build their knowledge in a progressive sequence. Quizzes, supplemental materials, and exercises reinforce important learning concepts. You can start and stop each module whenever you want to, and go back to any and all modules at any time to watch again.
Instructor Support & Interaction
You will receive 1,5 hours of local support when you enrolled. If you need additional help with the course material or have specific questions about your thermal imager, we have conveniently set up a private section in our Snell Community to ask questions and interface with our instructors and other students. You may also receive support privately by e-mail.
