Fluke8588

Fluke 8588A Reference Multimeter

sku Product SKU:  FCAL-8588A

Stability, simplicity, and performance by design

The 8588A incorporates exceptional linearity, low noise, and stability in the design. This best-in-class long-scale digital reference multimeter guarantees superior 3.5 ppm one-year dc voltage relative accuracy and long-term stability over a wide measurement range and functions.

The 8588A contains the world’s most stable voltage references and attenuators custom crafted at Fluke Calibration.  These precision components eliminate the need for daily internal self-calibration to compensate for drift when less-precise components are used.  Autozeroing also becomes unnecessary because the amplifier offsets are ultra-stable.  The 8588A achieves an exceptional 8.5-digit resolution reading in one second, two times shorter than the next best in class, which amounts to considerable productivity improvements.

The 8588A is easy and intuitive to use. It is the ideal lab multimeter for metrologists and calibration laboratory managers who expect and appreciate a straightforward setup that quickly achieves the maximum performance of the instrument.

  • 2.7 µV/V (95%), 3.5 µV/V (99%), 1 year relative accuracy, dc voltage without internal self-calibration or auto-adjustments
  • 0.5 µV/V (95%), 0.65 µV/V (99%), 24 hour stability, dc voltage
  • 7 µΩ/Ω (95%), 9 µΩ/Ω (99%), 1 year, resistance
  • 2.02x full scale stretches lower noise floor to higher signal levels to maximize higher accuracies from the instrument
  • 200 ns to 100 s aperture setting allows the industry's widest flexibility to control data capture window

Accuracy, offset and stability provide excellent ac performance

The 8588A provides the most accurate true ac rms measurement available in a Fluke Calibration multimeter.

With a 5 mega-samples-per-second sampling analog-to-digital converter and an extraordinarily stable dc analog path, the 8588A achieves remarkable ac rms measurement performance that is ten times faster, two times less noisy, and more sensitive for low level signals than other instruments in this class. It utilizes digital rms calculations to maintain full resolution of a wide dynamic range of digitized signals, so you can see a wide range of measurements clearly.

Rapid digital filters are more effective than their analog equivalents for faster settling. The digital filters eliminate the dielectric absorption on analog filters, commonly associated with residual slow-tail characteristics. The digital filters effectively shorten settling time to within 6 cycles of the filter frequency and less than 1 ppm of the fully settled value. This is up to 10 times faster than other long scale precision digital multimeters at low frequencies.

Low noise is achieved from averaging the collected high-resolution digitized data and the inherently stable signal path. De-coupling low level signal sensitivity from temperature drift enables the 8588A to make higher accuracy low-level ac measurements. Therefore, temperature drift, offsets, and long-term instability typically associated with an analog rms converter are eliminated.

  • 60 µV/V (95%), 77 µV/V (99%), 1 year relative accuracy, for the most accurate ac voltage measurement
  • 250 µA/A (95%), 323 µA/A (99%), 1 year relative accuracy, ac current
  • 15 ms settling time at 1kHz ac filter form 10x faster ac voltage measurement
  • 2.02x full scale Vpp, 1.2x full scale rms
  • Up to 30 A for peak ac current greatly extends ac current measurement range

Usability designed for metrologists by metrologists

The 8588A is the ideal lab multimeter. It streamlines the measurement process while eliminating misunderstandings, with an easy-to-access user interface in English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish. An intuitive graphical display lets you easily visualize trends, histograms, complex waveforms, and statistics and perform routine metrology tasks quickly. You can perform both real-time and post-capture analysis for short-term and long-term stability, identifying and quantifying drifts, run-around noise, and uncertainty analysis without the need for an external computer or software. You can also quickly visualize post-processed frequency domain signals of fundamental and harmonic amplitude and phase content.

Some popular system multimeters have complex menu structures and unintuitive commands, while others lack any user interface, presenting barriers to training and operation. By contrast, the 8588A/8558A feature an easy to- access configuration menu that makes it easy to train new users.

The front panel features many new usability improvements. Visual Connection Management™ output terminals light up to show which terminals are active, guiding the user to make the correct connections. The handles are over-molded for comfort and easy transport.

USB host ports are placed both on the front and rear of the instrument. Use the ports to export data to external memory devices or simplify firmware updates. For remote communication with a PC, choose from Ethernet, GPIB or USBTMC connectors on the rear panel.

The 8558A/8558A provides full emulation of the Fluke 8508A Reference Multimeter and command compatibility of the Keysight 3458A Digital Multimeter via SCPI commands, making it an ideal replacement for these older instruments.

  • Graphical display that enables instantaneous visualization of trend plot, statistical analysis, histogram and FFT.
  • GPIB, USBTMC, Ethernet allows industry-standard selection of remote interface. • USB thumb drive enables quick and easy data transfer to PC in .csv format.
  • SCPI compliant commands with 8508A and 3458A emulation mode simplifies and accelerates system upgrade process to 8588A/8558A
  • Programmable front/rear input switching with ratio measurement allows ratio-metric measurements between front and rear terminals in dc voltage, resistance, current functions with state-ofthe- art linearity, noise performance, superb transfer uncertainties.
  • Capacitance and RF power meter readout from Rohde & Schwarz NRP Series expands the utility of 8588A in calibrating multi-product calibrators for improved productivity in calibration labs.

The MET/CAL™ Calibration Management Software advantage

The 8588A and 8558A work with Fluke Calibration MET/CAL™ Calibration Software, in 8508A emulation mode, allowing increased throughput while ensuring calibrations are performed consistently every time. This powerful software documents calibration procedures, processes and results for ease in complying with ISO/IEC 17025 and similar quality standards.

Liquid Trap

sku Product SKU:  FCL-Liquid Trap

The 7000-102 Liquid Trap can be used with most any pneumatic test or calibration system where liquid contamination may be present in the device under test. Although the preferred procedure is to insure the device under test is free of both liquid and particulate contamination prior to calibration, the 7000-102 provides a degree of insurance to protect the calibration instrument.

The 7000-102 can be used with any calibrator, including the Model 7010 and complete line of Series 7215 Digital Pressure Controllers. It can assist with minimizing the possibility of contamination of the unique Ruska quartz sensor found in these instruments along with the control valves and solenoid valves, all of which are designed for pneumatic operation and can be damaged when exposed to liquids.

The 7000-102 is also compatible with Druck’s line of pressure controllers including the DPI 515 and DPI 520 Digital Pressure Calibrators.

Further, the 7000-102 can be used with virtually any test or calibration system where the pressure does not exceed 3000 psi.

A convenient drain valve allows periodic removal of accumulated liquids. Due to the pressure range, the level inside the Trap cannot be observed. Therefore it is recommended that the drain valve be opened on a frequent basis or prior to each test. A fitting is provided on the drain valve to allow connection to tubing that can run to a container for disposal.

The 7000-102 Liquid Trap is provided with a bench mount stand with two mounting holes for a sturdy installation.

Fluke Calibration 155X Stik Thermometer

sku Product SKU:  FCAL-155X Stik

Finally, a digital substitute for your mercury-in-glass thermometers! Accurate and repeatable to ± 0.05 °C over its full range, the 1551A/1552A “Stik Thermometer is the new “gold standard" of industrial temperature calibration. Whether working outdoors in environments where potentially explosive gases may be present or on the floor of a processing plant, the intrinsically-safe, battery operated, portable reference thermometer is designed to go where you work.

Features at a glance

  • Accuracy of ± 0.05 °C (± 0.09 °F) over full range
  • Intrinsically safe (ATEX and IECEx compliant)
  • Two models to choose from (-50 °C to 160 °C or -80 °C to 300 °C)
  • User-configurable temperature Trend/Stability indicator
  • Display temperature in °C or °F
  • Optional data logging to internal memory
  • 300-hour battery life
  • Percent battery-life and low-battery indicator

Thermometer probe and digital readout combined into one unit

The stainless steel probe and digital readout are fixed together and calibrated as a system. The accuracy specification is easy to understand since it includes all uncertainty components, including drift, for up to one year1. The large backlit LCD display rotates 90° degrees making it easy to read from any angle. A user-configurable stability/trend indicator lets you know when your temperature is stable enough to record an accurate measurement. A user-settable auto-off function extends typical battery life to three hundred hours. A low-battery indicator and stop-measure function prevent erroneous measurements from being made due to low battery life. A simple three-point calibration function allows you to easily and accurately calibrate the “Stik" Thermometer. Data logging to internal memory of up to 10,000 time-stamped measurements is optionally available.

Why calibrate process temperature sensors?

Because temperature greatly effects the accuracy of a volumetric measurement, process manufacturers of chemical, pharmaceutical, food or petroleum products require accurate temperature measurements—especially for processes where quality or custody transfer are regulated by government agencies. Since all temperature sensors are subject to drift with time, regular calibration or verification against a reliable reference thermometer is required. Finding a reference thermometer that is accurate, repeatable and robust, however, can be challenging.

What’s wrong with my reference thermometer?

Industrial reference thermometers available on the market today, such as mercury-in-glass thermometers (or “ASTM thermometers") and portable electronic thermometers are useful, but both come with inherent problems. Although accurate and repeatable, mercury thermometers are fragile. The risk of a mercury spill poses potential hazards to the environment and to the health of personnel. Many of the United States and European Union countries have already banned their use in industrial applications. Some organizations have replaced their mercury thermometers with more durable portable electronic thermometers, only to discover that the RTD probes lack the repeatability and dependability required of a legitimate reference thermometer.

The best alternative to mercury thermometers

The Fluke “Stik" Thermometer is accurate, stable and durable, making it the best alternative to mercury thermometers and existing electronic thermometers. The thin-film RTD sensor incorporates the same characteristics of other premium reference thermometers designed by Hart Scientific, but it is more robust and less susceptible to drift. Accuracy and repeatability, however, are not sacrificed for improved durability.

Using a glass-stem mercury- or spirit-filled thermometer at different immersion depths, or at significantly different ambient temperatures from which it was calibrated, may require the application of emergent-stem corrections that can be tedious but necessary to calculate an accurate measurement. This isn’t required with the “Stik" Thermometer. The sensor of the 1551A Ex requires a minimum immersion depth of only seven centimeters (2.8 inches), with no appreciable effect on the measured temperature due to heat loss through stem conduction. Some digital thermometers can become less accurate when used outside a narrow range of ambient temperatures. This isn’t the case for the “Stik" Thermometer. Your measurement remains accurate in ambient temperatures from -10 degrees to 50 degrees celsius (14 degrees to 122 degrees fahrenheit). With a superior probe design combined with electronic functions that assist accurate measurement, the “Stik" Thermometer surpasses the capabilities of other digital thermometers and is the perfect substitute for your mercury thermometers. 1In order to minimize sensor drift, the probe should always be protected from mechanical shock.

Five reasons to replace mercury thermometers

  1. Since the “Stik" Thermometer does not contain mercury, it is not subject to government-imposed bans. Government agencies worldwide have either banned or are seeking to ban the use and transportation of industrial mercury thermometers—this seems to be a growing trend.
  2. The stainless steel probe sheath of the “Stik" Thermometer is far more robust than the glass stem of a mercury thermometer and better suited for industrial environments. And since the “Stik" thermometer does not contain mercury, the risk of an accidental mercury spill is eliminated.
  3. When considering cost of ownership, a digital thermometer is less expensive than a mercury thermometer. With a mercury thermometer, you either invest in equipment or you hire out to clean up after a mercury spill.
  4. Mercury thermometers cannot be adjusted after calibration. The actual temperature must be calculated by applying corrections to the measured temperature. This costs time and is susceptible to calculation error. A digital thermometer does the math for you—the displayed temperature accurately represents the actual measured temperature.
  5. Emergent-stem corrections may also be required if the mercury thermometer is not used under the same conditions under which it was calibrated. A digital thermometer doesn’t require that you match calibration conditions to achieve an accurate measurement. You’re only required to meet the minimum immersion requirements—which is only seven centimeters (2.8 inches) in the case of the 1551A Ex.

PG9602 Piston Gauge

sku Product SKU:  FCL-PG9602

INNOVATIONS TO MINIMIZE UNCERTAINTY

Two decades ago, DH Instruments PG7000 family of piston gauges introduced the advantages of on-board sensing and monitoring technology, as well as other performance and ergonomic enhancements. The PG9000 platform adds several innovations to improve pressure measurements even further.

The platform consists of a piston gauge base, terminal and new remote electronics module. The terminal is the user interface. It stores metrological component data, reports operating and ambient condition status and calculates pressure.

The PG9000 piston gauge base supports automatic piston-cylinder rotation and mass handling, but all of the electronics to support the sensors and rotation control have been relocated to a remote electronics module. This architecture supports the best possible temperature stability at the base, even with prolonged vacuum operation, since any significant sources of heat are located away from the base.

The PG9602 mounting post has two integrated PRTs for reduced piston-cylinder temperature uncertainty. The PRTs are easily removed for calibration. A capacitance diaphragm gauge is included in the optional vacuum reference hardware for making residual vacuum measurements in absolute mode. PG9602 can also integrate the measurement output from virtually any user-supplied vacuum sensor.

METROLOGY SUPPORTED BY AUTOMATION

AMH automated mass handling technology is expanded on PG9602 to provide gauge and absolute operation with up to a 100 kg mass load. Eliminating manual mass loading minimizes mechanical wear, improving mass stability. The automated mass handler operates inside the evacuated bell jar, so the time to release and draw a vacuum while changing masses between test points is eliminated. The sustained vacuum produces lower and more static residual vacuum values. Total test time and productivity are greatly improved, especially on absolute pressure tests. More importantly, full automation promotes highly consistent measurements and allows extensive tests with many test points that would be impractical to perform manually. And with the help of calibration management software like COMPASS® for Pressure, tests can be run fully unattended.

4322 Automated Pressure Calibration System

sku Product SKU:  FCL-4322

4322 AUTOMATED PRESSURE CALIBRATION SYSTEM COMPONENTS

4322 PRESSURE CONTROLLER

The 4322 Pressure Controller is the primary component of the 4322 Automated Pressure Calibration System and is itself a highly capable calibrator. Very wide range measurement and control capabilities and advanced features are packed into one transportable, easy-to-use package.

SIMPLE, ACCURATE PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS

The 4322 Pressure Controller provides 0.1% of reading total one-year measurement uncertainty from low pressure to 10,000 psi (70 MPa). The simple yet accurate percent-of-reading measurement performance enables you to calibrate a wide range of workload with confidence that the test uncertainty radio (TUR) is adequate.

Four plug-and-play pressure measurement modules and a barometric pressure module are responsible for the pressure controller’s very wide measurement range. The 4322 switches module ranges automatically and seamlessly during use to utilize the best pressure module for each test point and operation mode.

All pressure modules store characterization and calibration information onboard and are interchangeable between systems to simplify calibration support and prevent downtime. Modules can be removed easily and replaced through the front panel with finger-tight fasteners.

Each 4322 Pressure Controller pressure measurement module features three redundant pressure sensors. The output of the three sensors is averaged automatically to reduce overall measurement uncertainty. The patented CalCheck feature automatically monitors and compares all three sensors to detect damage or out-of-tolerance conditions in the module, preventing potential measurement escapes before they can result in critical errors and costly recalls.

AUTOMATED PRESSURE GENERATION AND CONTROL

The 4322 Pressure Controller features automated pressure control from low absolute and negative gauge pressures to 10,000 psi (70 MPa). With breakthrough high-speed piezoresistive valve technology, the 4322 Pressure Controller can set and precisely control pressure to its highest range more quickly than even any other high-end benchtop or rack-mount controller available.

The pressure controller also features onboard automated vacuum and pressure generation and control, for calibrating devices from less than 1 inHg (0.5 psi, 3.5 kPa) absolute to 300 psi (2 MPa), without any external pressure or vacuum source. Patented pump-control technology enables the pressure controller to control faster, generate lower absolute pressure and control more precisely than other pump-based pressure calibrators.

The 4322 Pressure Controller offers adjustable control setting and multiple control modes to most efficiently meet the precision needs for the UUT being calibrated.

INTEGRATED CONTAMINATION PREVENTION SYSTEM

The 4322 Pressure Controller features an integrated contamination prevention system (CPS) to prevent contamination that can lead to costly downtime, damage and measurement errors. The CPS prevents liquid and particulate contamination from entering the pressure controller by maintaining unidirectional flow away from the controller. Upward pressure excursions are accomplished when the controller introduces clean supply gas into the test circuit through the CPS. Downward pressure excursions are accomplished through a purge solenoid valve located on the CPS, external to the pressure controller. Rather than being drawn into the controller, the gas and any liquid it has drawn out of the UUT are expelled through the CPS into a waste bottle for disposal.

As an extra level of protection against cross contamination of UUTs, Fluke Calibration designed the CPS to be modular and easily exchanged. You can remove and replace a CPS module from the 4322 Pressure Controller in just seconds and with only one hand. Color-coded CPS modules are available to separate “clean” from “dirty” service. You can open and clean the CPS assembly itself in just minutes without tools.

INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE

The 4322 Pressure Controller features rubberized direct function keys for common operations and a keypad for numerical entry. A rotary selection/jog wheel allows you to quickly increase and decrease pressure during a pressure calibration and navigate efficiently through the menus.

The advanced graphical user interface (GUI) makes it easy to review and edit calibrator settings; set up, store and execute test profiles; store results; and print calibration reports directly to any standard printer. The 4322 also features a full library of remote SCPI operation functions that you can access through USB 2.0 type B, IEEE 488.2 or RS-232 connections for full automation.

Despite being one of the most advanced, high-performance and feature-packed pressure calibrators available, the GUI makes the 4322 Pressure Controller remarkably easy to use. The “Normal” operating mode makes everyday calibration activities simple to perform, while the “Advanced” mode enables more experienced users to fully utilize the advanced features.

In “Normal Mode” operation, only necessary information is displayed as you are prompted through setup and execution of a calibration. The top half of the display consists of a window that clearly communicates pressure measurement and control values and settings. The bottom half of the display houses an instructional menu system that guides you step by step as you set up and execute pressure calibration sequences in an intuitive, linear workflow process. Calibration results with pass/fail criteria are displayed during the calibration and can be saved for electronic download at a later time. You can generate and send a calibration report directly to a standard printer via a USB connection on the pressure controller.

“Advanced Mode” allows you to control and measure pressure without stepping through a structured calibration sequence. Use this mode to access settings, data, and less-frequently needed information.

4322 PRESSURE INTENSIFIER

The 4322 Pressure Intensifier boosts supply gas from the N2 gas cylinder or other source of clean gas medium to as high as 10,500 psi for high-pressure calibrations.

The pressure intensifier employs a patented rotary cam design that drives four pistons to quickly generate the targeted output pressure. Because pressure is generated by four pistons operating in series with alternating compression cycles, the 4322 Pressure Intensifier produces smooth high-pressure output, instead of the significant pressure surges typical with traditional single-piston gas boosters.

The pressure intensifier is powered by a high-performance brushless servo motor drive with variable speed control, resulting in quiet operation that does not require facility-grade compressed air to drive it, or liquid lubrication.

To operate, simply select the target intensifier pressure from 1,000 to 10,000 psi (7 to 70 MPa) in 1,000 psi (7 MPa) increments by pushing the appropriate key on the pressure intensifier’s membrane keypad. The pressure intensifier controls the variable speed motor to generate and actively maintain the pressure supplied to the pressure controller.

The 4322 Pressure Intensifier generates pressure fast enough to keep pace with the 4322 Pressure Controller’s gas consumption during a typical calibration. On-demand pressure generation saves you from having to pre-charge a highpressure accumulator, thus reducing setup and operation time and improving safety.

4322 ACCESSORIES

Accessories enable you to optimize a 4322 Automated Pressure Calibration System for various applications.

HANDHELD REMOTE CONTROL PENDANT

Worksites do not always allow easy access to pressure measurement devices for calibration. The 4322 Handheld Remote Control Pendant enables you to calibrate even the most difficult-to-reach pressure devices while safely and effectively positioning both user and equipment.

The remote pendant is lightweight, compact and rugged. A rotary wheel, rubberized function keys and backlit graphical user interface mimic the controls and user interface on the 4322 Pressure Controller to allow one-handed pressure control and step-by-step execution of calibration sequences. The remote pendant features electrical switch test connections and test leads for fully automated pressure switch testing.

When combined with an optional 10 ft. (3 m) test hose, you can operate with agility in a tight or difficult workspace.

You might use the pendant to perform tasks like these:

  • Operate the calibrator while reading the output of the UUT at a remote terminal, or from an otherwise obstructed angle.
  • Set the calibrator on the floor or other stable surface while reading the output of the UUT at a different height.
  • Stand at a safe distance or behind a barrier when performing calibrations in a hazardous location.

PORTABLE COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDER ASSEMBLY

An optional portable compressed gas cylinder is available to supply gas to the 4322 Pressure Calibration System for operation above the maximum pressure controller pump pressure of 300 psi (2 MPa). The lightweight, aluminum cylinder features a shut-off valve with protective valve guard and a soft shoulder strap for portability.

The cylinder can be charged with up to 2,000 psi (14 MPa) supply gas for in-situ calibration. A removable self-venting regulator and high-pressure supply hose with quick-connection adaptors are included so you can quickly and safely connect the cylinder to the 4322 Pressure Controller or Pressure Intensifier.

Note: The 4322 Portable Gas Cylinder is certified according to United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) regulations. Use, refill and transportation of the gas cylinder may be subject to local regulation and/or prohibited from use in certain locations.

HIGH-PRESSURE FLEXIBLE HOSES AND ADAPTORS

The 4322 Automated Pressure Calibration System features test connection and hose options to further improve ease of use and safety.

High-pressure connections in the 4322 Automated Pressure Calibration System feature the Fluke Calibration IQC70 system. IQC70 adaptors are Interlocking quick-connect pressure fittings with working pressure of up to 10,000 psi (70 MPa). The male adaptor (stem) inserts easily into the female adaptor (coupler), where it snaps in and is held in place by retaining pins in the coupler. To disconnect, simply push a collar on the coupler, which releases the stem from the retaining pins. Applying pressure to the connection locks the collar and pins into place, preventing the stem and coupling from disconnecting until pressure is removed from the system.

The supply, output and test ports of the 4322 Pressure Controller, CPS and Pressure Intensifier are IQC70 couplers. IQC70 stem adaptors are available for various pressure connection types and sizes, allowing you to mount UUTs directly and easily to the 4322 Pressure Controller test port during calibration. The innovative IQC70 design allows the stem to rotate in the coupling even when pressurized, so you can position the UUT for best visibility.

Optional 10-foot (3 meter) test hoses are available to extend the test port if the UUT cannot mount directly to the pressure controller. The 4322 test hoses are rated to 10,000 psi (70 MPa) working pressure, yet are extremely light and flexible. A stainless steel braided sheath protects the durable high-pressure hose from accidental pinching or shearing. Test hoses are color-coded consistently with the CPS modules, so you can easily see the difference between “clean” and “dirty” service plumbing.

FCAL-9118-Front

Fluke Calibration 9118A Thermocouple Calibration Furnace

sku Product SKU:  FCAL-9118A

Seven key features set the 9118A apart from other high-temperature calibration furnaces:

1. WIDE TEMPERATURE RANGE SPANNING MOST HIGH-TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS

Standards and guidelines such as AMS 2750 and EURAMET cg-8 require that a thermocouple be calibrated over the full temperature range in which it is used. The 9118A temperature range of 300 °C to 1200 °C covers most high-temperature applications.

2. FLEXIBLE CONFIGURATION FOR CALIBRATING A WIDE RANGE OF THERMOCOUPLE TYPES

The 9118A furnace can be operated with or without an isothermal block, which increases calibration workload that can be performed with a single furnace:

  • Tube furnace configuration (without isothermal block): Base-metal thermocouples are often sheathed in formable materials such as braided fiberglass or PTFE. During calibration, they are bundled around a reference thermometer, held together with fiberglass cord or tape, and inserted into a tube furnace.
  • Isothermal block configuration: Metal- or ceramic-sheathed thermocouples are generally constructed with noble-metal thermoelements and therefore have higher calibration accuracy requirements. The isothermal block, which accommodates up to four 6.35 millimeter probes, improves heat transfer and temperature stability. This better equalizes the temperature between the reference probe and the UUT, which lowers measurement uncertainty compared to calibration without a block.

The furnace configuration can be quickly changed by selecting the calibration parameters stored in the controller for the desired configuration and inserting or removing the alumina ceramic isothermal block.

3. BEST-IN-CLASS TEMPERATURE STABILITY AND UNIFORMITY FOR CALIBRATION ACCURACY

Axial and radial uniformity, as well as constant temperature stability over time, are key factors that contribute to accurate thermocouple calibrations.

To minimize axial temperature gradients, three actively controlled heater zones compensate for temperature differentials between the central zone and the front and rear zones. Type-S thermocouples, which are less susceptible to drift than other types, are used for zone control and cutout. Axial temperature uniformity when using the isothermal block is ± 0.2 °C over a 60 mm (2.4 in) zone from full immersion at 1200 °C.

Radial (hole-to-hole) uniformity is ± 0.25 °C at 1200 °C when using the isothermal block, and ± 0.5 °C over a 14 mm (0.6 in) diameter at the center of the furnace tube without a block.

When using the isothermal block, temperature stability is ± 0.1 °C or better over the full temperature range of the furnace.

No other calibration furnace in its class comes close to this level of performance for both modes of operation.

4. AUTOMATED SETPOINT CONTROL FOR IMPROVED LAB PRODUCTIVITY

A proprietary programmable controller, available in nine languages (English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian), enables technicians to automate setpoint temperature control for up to eight setpoint temperatures, the temperature ramp rate, and the time duration the furnace controls at each setpoint.

Automation and data collection can be further enhanced when the Fluke 1586A Super-DAQ is connected to the 9118A furnace through the RS-232 interface. The Super-DAQ can be programmed to control the furnace's setpoint temperatures and collect data for all sensors under test once the furnace has stabilized to within parameters defined by the user. After data has been collected at the first programmed temperature, the Super-DAQ will advance the furnace to the remaining programmed temperatures, collecting data at each setpoint. Once the test has been configured and started, the technician can walk away to work on other activities.

5. NON-METALLIC BLOCK HELPS MINIMIZE THERMOCOUPLE CONTAMINATION

Calibration furnaces with metallic blocks can contaminate thermocouples, causing their accuracy to drift over time. To minimize the risk of contamination, the furnace well and isothermal block of the 9118A are constructed of non-metallic, ceramic alumina. This eliminates the need to protect the thermocouples under test with costly ceramic sleeving—reducing cost of ownership.

6. DEEP IMMERSION DEPTH TO SUPPORT MOST THERMOCOUPLE CALIBRATIONS

Industry standards such as AMS2750 recommend calibrating thermocouples at their normal working depth of insertion. The 9118A immersion depth is 365 mm (14.4 in) when using the isothermal block and 350 mm (13.8 in) to the central point of the furnace without a block. This immersion depth is adequate for most of thermocouple calibrations. The 40 mm x 700 mm (1.6 in x 27.6 in) open-ended furnace tube can also be useful when calibrating multi-junction thermocouples or when sample testing spools of thermocouple wire.

 7. DYNAMIC HEATER CONTROL AND CUTOUTS FOR RELIABILITY AND SAFETY

The 9118A controls the heater power level below 100% to prevent the heater elements from overheating—improving heater reliability and lifetime. Redundant over-temperature cutouts are built into the 9118A to ensure safe operation of the furnace. These include over-temperature, chassis thermostat, fan fault, control thermocouple fault, and user programmable cutouts.

Calibration Bath Fluids

sku Product SKU:  FCL-Calibration Bath Fluids

Fluke Calibration carries a full line of bath fluids covering temperature ranges from –100°C to 550°C.

Finally, there’s a convenient source for small quantities of bath fluids for any temperature range. Why pay for more than you need?

Viscosity, volatility and other properties that change with temperature affect the performance of fluids in controlled baths and circulators. Fluke Calibration has tested and used each of the fluids we sell. Over the ranges recommended in the following table, each fluid remains at a low enough viscosity to be adequately pumped or stirred. Whether your application is industrial or critical lab calibration work, Hart fluids give you top performance and stability.

For temperature ranges too high for oils, we have a bath salt with a viscosity in the molten state similar to the viscosity of water. For your convenience, it is shipped in a granular form, making it easy to fill your bath.

Between its melting point of 150°C and 550°C, this salt has the highest temperature stability and uniformity available in a bath fluid. It does not smoke like oils or give off dust like “sand" or fluidized alumina baths. Check with your bath manufacturer before using this salt to make sure your equipment is compatible. Fluke Calibration offers three standard bath models and custom-designed units for use with this salt.

Fluid specifications
It’s important to understand a few specifications before selecting a bath fluid. We’ve seen bath fluids advertised with a temperature range that spans from the freezing point to the flash point or beyond.

For example, type 710 silicone oil has a freezing point of –22°C, but freezing point has nothing to do with the point at which the oil becomes so thick it cannot be properly stirred. Type 710 oil should really only be used down to about 80°C. It’s a viscosity issue, not a freezing-point issue. Usable range is the question. Suitability for calibration work is the specification that counts.

The usable viscosity range is determined by your bath’s stirring or pumping design. Fluke Calibration baths can be operated using fluids with up to 50 centistokes viscosity. This gives you additional usable range in the lower temperature levels of the fluid.

Some baths advertised as calibration baths require fluids with 10 centistokes or less viscosity to operate properly. The usable ranges in our table on the previous page assume the use of a Fluke bath.

In addition to range and viscosity issues, there are a number of other issues to consider when choosing a bath fluid. The other considerations are:

  • Thermal characteristics
  • Lifetime
  • Change in characteristics due to temperature cycling
  • Absorption of water from the air
  • Vaporization—fumes and fume hood requirements
  • Expansion due to heat
  • Contamination—mixing oils or introducing contamination with unclean probes
  • Conductivity properties
  • Effects of using fluids outside of their range—fire, explosion, polymerization
  • Effects of altitude on boiling point
